Bratislava, May 15 (TASR) - Interior Minister Matus Sutaj Estok (Voice-SD) has said that he'll do everything he can to ensure that Wednesday's attack on Prime Minister Robert Fico (Smer-SD) is thoroughly investigated as quickly as possible.

"Our common task is to stop spreading political hatred immediately. Tempers are naturally running high, but it would be very wrong to escalate this dangerous situation even further," wrote Sutaj Estok on Facebook.

According to the minister, Slovakia is experiencing the worst day of its democracy. Sutaj Estok noted that for the first time in modern Slovakia's history, someone decided to express a political opinion not in an election but with a gun in the street. "And with the intention not to argue, but to physically eliminate a political opponent," Sutaj Estok noted.

The minister said that he perceives the shooting as a warning to the entire society that if people don't stop now, they will destroy everything that has united them as a nation. "It's a terrible disappointment for me personally to see how our common effort to belong to the civilised world of the most advanced countries has been reduced to nothing in a moment," the minister remarked.

The attack, he said, deserves universal and unequivocal condemnation. According to him, this can be followed by reconciliation of the nation and calming of tempers. "It's our only hope for the future," he added.
