Ondrus: Pellegrini Called for Calming Down of Society Even Before Election.

Bratislava, May 28 (TASR) - The Slovak political scene really needs the defusing of tension and this is perceived by Voice-SD as its main mission, seeing as party leader Peter Pellegrini called for the calming down of society already before the attempt on Prime Minister Robert Fico's (Smer-SD) life and it was one of the key messages of his presidential campaign, MEP candidate Branislav Ondrus (Voice-SD) told TASR TV on Tuesday.

In Ondrus' view, Pellegrini rightly estimated even before the 2024 presidential election that one of the main problems bedevilling Slovak society is its excessive polarisation and too much political tension. "I feel that there is a consensus on the Slovak political scene that the attempt [on Fico's life] is the result of unsustainable and unacceptable radicalisation in the language used by politicians and the way they present their messages to the public," he stated.

When asked whether he expects a similar stance also from Fico, Ondrus replied that he cannot speculate how such a trauma might change a person. However, Ondrus expects that Fico will try to contribute towards the calming down of the societal climate, too. Ondrus added that the era of "vilification" of selected politicians by the media should end and the public needs to realise that even though political parties change in power, democracy and its institutions stay unchanged.

As for the government's dialogue with European institutions, Ondrus stated that Slovakia has received critical letters from two European commissioners, who, however, belong to the same European political family as opposition Progressive Slovakia. "Simecka used to be a longstanding European Parliament vice-president on behalf of the same party as Didier Reynders, the commissioner in the European Commission," claimed Ondrus, who added that PS leader Michal Simecka knew the contents of Reynders' letter even before the time he could officially learn about it.

One of the Voice-SD's goals in the European Parliament will be to inform MEPs truthfully and objectively about the situation in Slovakia. The overarching message of all its candidates will be the promotion of peace in Europe. In Ondrus' view, the role of peacekeeper should fall naturally to the EU, yet it has shown "militaristic tendencies" instead that only serve to prolong the conflict in Ukraine.
